Plantain and Apple Crisp

This what you have been waiting for! George at Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations A big thank you to him for taking these beautiful photos for me and getting me some new fans! We were doing a Whole30 for Easter, but I still wanted to have some kind of dessert so I decided to whip this up! For my guests that don’t do Paleo I drizzled honey all over the top. There were definitely no leftovers of this dessert!

Servings:5

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 45mins-1 hour

Ingredients:

  • 3 Apples of your choice ( I like Fuji) Peeled, cored, and sliced thin
  • 2 Plantains, peeled and sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup Almond Meal
  • 1/4 cup Pecans, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Shredded Coconut
  • 2 Tbsp Cinnamon, divided
  • 2 Tbsp Nutmeg, divided
  • 2 Tbsp Vanilla
  • 4 Tbsp Brewed Coffee (optional)
  • 4 Tbsp Coconut Oil, melted.

Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350
  2. Peel, Core and Slice your Apples and Plantains and place in a bowl and toss with 1 tbsp Cinnamon, 1 tbsp Nutmeg
  3. Place all remaining ingredients in another bowl and mix well til it gets a little crumbly, this will be your Crisp mixture
  4. Prepare a 9×9 baking dish with Non-stick spray, or coat it with Coconut Oil
  5. Place your Apple and Plantain mixture all over the bottom, then top with the Crisp mixture.
  6. Bake, uncovered for 45minutes-1hour until the Apples are at your desired texture and until the Crisp topping has hardened and browned.
  7. Spoon it out into 5 bowls, and if your feeling daring or want to impress some people with an awesome Paleo dessert, top it with my Maple Pecan Ice Cream!

Coffee is a product of agriculture. Therefore coffee isnt Paleo. One shouldn’t claim a Paleo “lifestyle” if they aren’t aren’t following one. Perhaps you could claim a Paleoesque diet. Or a semi-Paleo diet.

Also, I’d like to point out that a person losing 20lbs in one month is beyond unhealthy, unless of course your husband was insanely obese. Judging from the before and after pictures, he wasn’t. I am assuming (and for the sake of his health) hoping you exaggerated his weight loss. Again, judging from the pictures in your About Me section, I am confident that my assumption is correct.

Good luck with your new lifestyle/diet/cure-all. There are plenty of resources available about a true Paleo “lifestyle”. I suggest doing your homework before you jump on the diet fad bandwagon.

Some light reason for when you aren’t cooking on your Paleo- grill, driving to Whole Foods to gather your very Paleo produce and hunting your very Paleo bacon:

      Thank you for your opinion.

I feel great, my husband feels great. That is all that matters to us. That is why we eat this way.

I do not have this up for negative comments, so if you feel the need to do so, please do so privately and do not attack my posts.

      • D says:

Id like to apologize if you felt that I was being negative or attacking you. That wasn’t my intention. I have been experimenting with Paleo on and off for several years. I read your enthusiasm for the lifestyle in your About Me section, and was simply trying to share some knowledge with you. Coffee is a very easy thing to overlook. When I do something I tend to have a “go hard or go home” attitude. I am sorry if I projected that onto you. There were no cruel intentions in my comments.

I think it’s great that you and your husband have adopted Paleo, and its fantastic that you feel healthy. Kudos to you both.

As for your friends, I applaud their loyalty and combativeness, but it’s unnecessary. And I did not link my blog, because I do not run a blog. The links I provided were to give some perspective (very opposite of close-minded).

By the way, the egg in the burger is fantastic. I will keep my opinions of your blog to myself from now on seeing as they are not welcome.

    • Danielle says:

I have a simple response to you…you obviously have too much time on your hands because I have seen plenty of “Paleo blogs/websites” that have recipes with sugar, white flour, etc. so you must be claiming you hit every single one of these and type your “better than thou attitude” comments. Or wait a “muscle bound bozo” that feels they are better than everyone else. If you don’t drink coffee…good for you!!! No one here claims to be an expert and last time I checked there is no certification for a paleo expert anyways!!

      • D says:

        Danielle,

White flour is also a product of agriculture as well.

        I couldn’t help it =]

      • Danielle says:

        D,
I do know white flour is not Paleo too. I was just making a point. Your comment did come across to be very rude. Your apology is appreciated. A lot of us are new to this whole Paleo lifestyle. We do not mind comments, but sometimes all of us including myself should try to read our posts before posting them and put ourselves in the other person’s shoes.

    • NIcky Purtle says:

How do you have an on and off paleo diet and a “go hard or go home” attitude? Opinions are one thing, but it does sound like attacking was your intention. If it wasn’t, you’re incredibly combative in your argument with very little reason to be so. If you have a problem with the post, there are far better ways for you to express it, instead of acting like a jerk and then coming back with a ridiculous “criticism isn’t welcome” response.

I see that the anonymous “D” has so graciously linked their blog and their stellar body pics for the world to judge “it”. Ignore the haters Jessilee!!! Obviously they have no clue. They are nothing but a cancer who have no idea what true “health” is. I guarantee your insides are much healthier than this person!! Paleo is not about weight loss, (although that’s a great benefit) and your hubby looks awesome as do you!! It is a lifestyle that heals you from the inside out!!

Keep doing what you are doing!! No one can hurt you without your permission!! 🙂

Go argue your minutiae of “what is paleo” D over on Paleo Hacks. Plenty of haters conglomerate there!

The only person who can be the Expert of you, IS YOU!! All the advice that anyone gives you must be questioned and tried out on you, by you, in order to make an informed decision to decide if that was RIGHT or WRONG for YOU!! No special schooling is necessary, you don’t need a college degree or a medical degree, or a nutritional degree to eat real food and see if it works or not. Self experimentation is the only way to truly know what works FOR YOU!!

    Keep on posting Jessilee!! 🙂

seeings as how none of us are true cavemen in the sense that we were alive and kicking in the time period in question, all we can do is attempt to make changes that we feel will benefit us physically, emotionally, etc (arguing if a cup of coffee is going to negate your primal spree is going to accomplish what exactly?- btw bulletproof coffee w butter and coco oil is wonderful..). Everyone’s primal plan is going to look different, athletes will have different demands, activity levels and goals will be factored, and it certainly requires alot finer tuning for us women! Since we are all alike in that we are trying to better ourselves, I think removing the ego part and realizing no one has all of the answers and no one is perfect, is the best first step we can all take. If you’ve seen positive results from this lifestyle, I feel we all owe a small debt to pass it along. I’m asked questions all the time and will always make any attempt I can to help anyone with what ive learned along the way, whether it’s regarding diet or exercise. since i’ve adopted paleoish living and crossfit, I’ve dropped over 90 lbs and feel tremendously better. Family and friends have slowly made changes on their own accord, I never paleo push people. There is no argument that eating clean will benefit in my opinion everyone. the degree in which you adopt it is your choice! there is no right or wrong, no paleo police, and every step towards cleaner eating is a win! keep doing what you’re doing!! inspire people by your actions. Thanks civilizedcaveman for sending me over =)

This looks awesome. I’m looking forward to trying it.

  12. Kevin says:

In regards to my health i am in the best shape of my life. Your assumption is incorrect. I lost 20lbs in 1.5 months. Never been faster, stronger, lighter. Feel great inside and out. If something isn’t broke why fix it? Diet fad bandwagon…i suppose you could call it a bandwagon if u had the notion of falling off beforehand. We put “real” foods into our bodies and have been doing so for several months, and the results have been eye-opening so i don’t think we jumped on any fad or bandwagon as you would call it. And it is a lifestyle. A person can choose to live their life however they want. What that individual chooses, then becomes their lifestyle. Why are you just posting this on her site to antagonize? It is naive to suggest you had another intent. I don’t recall her ever advertising a cure-all either.

  13. Emma says:

Oh I’m sad I’m in Australia and plantains are hard to comeby 😦 Looks delicious!

  14. Rena says:

We aren’t doing a historical re-enactment here. We are simply trying to live a little healthier. Okay, coffee is part of the agricultural revolution. Well, if you use that argument, why stop there? What about power and electricity? What about the computer? Most things we have today are products of some advancement revolution. I imagine you probably go to a store to buy your clothes. You clearly are using a computer. I really don’t think that cavemen had grocery stores, department stores, computers, and any number of other modern conveniences. If you’re going to be so high and mighty and criticize someone who is just trying to eat a little better, perhaps you should look first at yourself. What’s the old saying? Don’t throw stones in glass houses.

I have to applaud the paleo/primal food bloggers because they put themselves out there for anyone to read and/or comment. And without the Internet and the multitude of websites and information readily at our fingertips, I doubt this lifestyle (hate the word diet, it has such a negative connotation) would barely be off the ground. Instead, I find many newcomers reading and commenting on how much changing to this lifestyle has changed their life. So we use some food items that are products of the agricultural revolution, but aren’t causing much (if any) harm health-wise. Is that such a bad thing? I mean c’mon, we are also using modern conveniences like electricity, computers, running water, etc. I don’t know about you, but I like my hot showers, warm house, flushing toilet, computer, food processor, etc. I like being able to go to a store or farmer’s market and buy what I need rather than having to do the work myself.

    Again, it’s not a historical re-enactment.

Just wondering…did you use ripe plantains (yellow) or overripe ones or green ones? Looks delish!
